El Retiro, Lavapiés and Madrid Río
El Retiro Park (15 minutes): Madrid's green lung. Don't miss the Crystal Palace and a rowboat on the lake at sunset. The Royal Botanical Garden is right next door.
Lavapiés (10 minutes): the city's most multicultural, lively neighbourhood. Tapas on Calle Argumosa, street art at La Tabacalera and food from half the world at the San Fernando Market.
Madrid Río and Matadero (20 minutes): a long riverside promenade ending at Matadero Madrid, a cultural centre with free exhibitions inside beautifully restored industrial halls.
Railway Museum (8 minutes): historic locomotives inside a 19th-century station. If your dates line up, the beloved Mercado de Motores flea market takes over the museum on the second weekend of every month.
